May/June President’s message

The time has come to say good bye…

This is my last message to you as CWC president (characteristically late) and I have many people to thank for this wonderful year.

First above all is Aaron Fultz, my VP and our new President.  Aaron has been a calm, reasonable voice who could see where I was going and helped me get there. There were a few situations that came up over the year where Aaron’s advice, support and strategic thinking meant all the difference. He is a modest man and will pooh-pooh my comments but I truly could not have managed this year without him.

All the new members who joined and contributed their talents and ideas and vigour… I hope you felt heard and valued and needed. We’ve really had some laughs and good times as we charged towards the accomplishments of the Community Achievement Awards, haven’t we?  I’m sorry for any confusion and false starts you might have felt while I was charting the course.  I hope I’ve shown you that you can be in charge without having all the answers, or needing to be right all the time. There are times you need to “back up the bus”.  Have to remember that a problem to be solved is not more important than making sure a person feels heard and appreciated.

And existing members:  people who toil away in the background, getting stuff done. Membership changes, updates to the website, minutes, registration duties, cutting the cheques and balancing the books, keeping track of volunteers and guarding our traditions. Thank you.

We, together, earned the Community of Excellence award. Well done, all! Next year, Aaron is going to capitalize our efforts and win the Community of Distinction, I know it. He cannot do it alone (and neither did I), so please lean in and offer your support to him. Get involved. There is not a lot of value in sitting back and expecting benefits to be handed to you on a plate. The people who get the most out of their STC membership are those who give back… even if it’s just a little bit - one task, one event - that’s what makes a community. Some have time to give a lot… but you will see that Aaron intends to make it easy to contribute as you can, here and there, no pressure, but your contributions will be noted and appreciated.

Of course, I’m not going far.  Aaron will be announcing his plans for the next year soon and how he plans to use the experience and skills of his executive council as a framework for ensuring the chapter has a strong structure for a brilliant future. He has my complete support, as well as yours, I hope. And there are still a few items I promised that have yet to be accomplished!

A final note: there is a summer chapter night coming up that is to be held in the boardroom at SRK, not our usual YWCA meeting place.  Check out Events for more details but plan to join us on Tuesday, July 16 as Robert Desprez, a former chapter leader, shows us how to whip ePubs into shape and do our bidding. I hope to see you there!
