May 17 Program Meeting - Communication Design for the Mobile Experience

The flourishing market for smart phones and tablets offers new challenges and opportunities to writers, graphic designers, photographers, website and software producers, and user interface designers. But how do we design great experiences?

◦ Can we use what we already know to help inform our design decision for these new devices, or do we have to  start from scratch?
◦ Is it possible to adapt content and navigation to work with smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices, or do we have to author all new content?
◦ How do user attitudes and expectations affect our approach to designing for new technology?

We’ll explore what’s changed, what’s stayed the same, and what’s going to work on computing devices that have now moved from the desktop to your palm.

David Drucker has been working as a User Experience Designer and Information Architect longer than he’d like to admit. He’s worked as both a consultant and employee with organizations that range from Sun Microsystems, Apple, IBM, Fidelity Investments, and The New England Journal of Medicine to the Harvard Business School and the US Coast Guard. He has spoken, trained, and written books on computers and software. When he sees a technology coming, he does his best to make sure that he’s ahead of it. In keeping with his goal to stay ahead of the curve, tonight’s talk will discuss the challenges of designing content and user interfaces for mobile devices - the ones available now, and the ones we’ll be seeing in the near future.
