Social Night Success

On Tuesday October 10th, the STC Canada West Coast held its first official “Beers With Peers”, or rather “Gelato With Guests”, at Café Calabria on Commercial Drive amidst some stunningly kitschy statuary. Practicing, student, and even potential technical communicators gathered together to schmooze over Paninis, cafe lattes, and ice cream, exchanging business cards, small talk, advice, and laughter. In a complete departure from our normal fields of endeavour (and some would say, from our senses), attendees split into teams and pitted their skills against gravity in a structure-building contest using mini-marshmallows and uncooked linguine (aptly, given our surroundings). Susan, Mona, Mellissa and Cynthia won $5 Timmy’s cards by popular vote when their pile of noodles was deemed the tallest after a 15-minute break for a geeky-book raffle. The event was a gooey success and people left sharing about the great sense of community between us. “It was an awesome gathering,” said Karen Rempel.

The next social event is in the works and this one will feature seasonal décor (and possibly a liquor license?) …pencil in December 11 on your social calendar for a cup of “Christmas cheer”!
