5 October 2010 notes from STC-CWC Independent Contractors (CIC) meetup
7:00 to 8:30 at Tim Hortons, 200 Burrard St., lower level food court

Organized by Ben Hechter who sent regrets but asked us to carry on without him, so we did.

Attending: Judith, Josh, Maria, Morgan, Rob, Steve & son, Pam

Informal mtg w/o an agenda or official note taking other than to gather email addresses. Notes will be sent to attendees and posted to the Contractors forum http://www.stcwestcoast.ca/index.php/forums/viewforum/15/

The loose format
  ⁃  introductions
  ⁃  job announcements
  ⁃  biz discussion
  ⁃  next CIC date/venue

The loose summary
⁃  writer looking for an editor, and word-of-mouth referrals
⁃  formal v. informal practice of finders fee
⁃  Drupal v. commercial content management systems
⁃  questioning the bounds - being helpful or unethical when tech writing extends to personal assistance
⁃  mat leave and the professional designation conundrum
⁃  peeved by dead links on CWC site
⁃  hey LinkedIn groupies - How much would you pay to subscribe to a master calendar (widget) that dynamically shows contractors availability. Take advantage of the market’s peaks and valleys.
⁃  Sharepoint Designer tools - vast capabilities but little used, messy HTML
⁃  Happy New Year! We’ve extended your contract, you look surprised
⁃  update from Sept mtg (http://www.stcwestcoast.ca/index.php/forums/viewthread/141/) on receiving payments from clients in Europe. Their standard method of payment is to transfer money directly to the contractor’s bank account. They need the street address of the bank branch, an IBAN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Bank_Account_Number, and a SWIFT code http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_code to appear on the invoice. These numbers are available from your bank.

Next meeting
First Tuesday of the month, 2 November, Tim Hortons, 200 Burrard St. There are several in the vicinity. Look for us in the lower level food court.
